Calculators have led to people no longer being able to do simple mental arithmetic. It's not the math that has suffered, but the arithmetic.

And feeding NotebookLM with a philosophy or law book and having ChatGPT write an essay from its questions and answers has already led to my students no longer thinking for themselves.

Reading ability? Interpretations? Analysis? Hardly any young students can do this these days. We have to teach them. We are wasting time. Students should be able to read and write, not have to learn it first. PISA? A city in Italy. Sad.

By the way: the failure rates at my university have been rising significantly for a good year now ... (I'm looking forward to the upcoming exams.)

On the positive side, the style and language of the essays are perfect. Anyone can now „write“ scientifically. However, the texts all sound equally mechanical.
